Thunderbird with IMAP and SMTP

Howto configure Thunderbird for mail.highway1.ch.

This howto explains how to configure Thunderbird to read emails using IMAP and send emails using SMTP.

Add Account

  1. Edit > Account Settings... > Add Account... > Email account
  2. Identity:
    Your Name: Example User
    Email Address: example@highway1.ch
  3. Server Information:
    Type: IMAP
    Incoming Server: mail.highway1.ch
  4. User Names:
    Incoming User Name: example@highway1.ch
  5. Account Name:
    Account Name: example@highway1.ch
  6. Finish

Configure Account

  1. Edit > Account Settings...
  2. example@highway1.ch/Server Settings:
    Security Settings: TLS
    Use secure authentication: no (not needed, since we are using a secure transport layer)
  3. example@highway1.ch/Composition & Addressing:
    Compose messages in HTML format: no
    Automatically quote the original message when replying: no
    - Then, start my reply above the quote

Add SMTP Account

  1. Edit > Account Settings...
  2. Left pane: Outgoing Server (SMTP) > Add...
  3. SMTP Server:
    Description: example@highway1.ch TLS
    Server Name: mail.highway1.ch
    Port: 25
    Use name and password: yes
    - User Name: example@highway1.ch
    Use secure connection: TLS
  4. Left pane: example@highway1.ch
    Outgoing Server (SMTP): example@highway1.ch TLS
